I really love the setup for this story, just Holmes and Watson cleaning up and Holmes deciding to tell a story he knows Watson will be interested in to, let's be honest here, get out of cleaning. I'm always up for the Domestic Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

I love the variation in what these stories are about, really proves that modern detective stories should not be about murder all the time, a treasure hunt is way better.

Yeah that's... I didn't like it, TBQH, but I dunno how it was intended exactly
Same on both counts. I feel like it was supposed to be... casual? I dunno. It feels very out of character, even if you can manage to justify away the patronizing aspect.
It does feel like I've read the same kind of casual use of the phrase 'my boy' between equals in other novels of the era, but it doesn't suit Holmes.

I've been listening to these in the form of the audiobooks read by Stephen Fry and it just sounds like Stephen Fry is playing a character being at least slightly patronising to a kind of simple character played by Hugh Laurie.
okay but this is kind of funny/ironic because when I was reading it, my thought was that it sounds like how Wooster's peers and their parental figures talk

Let's see if we can try to read the next story before the weekend this time? 😅

Next up, The Reigate Puzzle

oooh, interesting, I know this one as the Reigate Squire. I'm gonna have to look into the history of that name change

Wikipedia wrote:The story only bore the title "The Adventure of the Reigate Squire" when it was published in The Strand Magazine.[3] When it was collected into book form, it was called "The Reigate Squires", the name under which it is most often known.[4]

The story was published in the UK in The Strand Magazine in June 1893, and in the US in Harper's Weekly on 17 June 1893. It was also published in the US edition of the Strand in July 1893. It was published in Harper's Weekly as "The Reigate Puzzle"[5].
Interesting! There doesn't seem to be any real significance to it. Maybe just a case of trying to localize for the audience.

If we're reading it before the weekend, do I still need to wait for the weekend to post about it? >.> <.<
